Model 3 vs Model Y on the used market

Australian classifieds still split into two piles: the Model 3 that commutes, and the Model Y that tows the weekender. The right used car is the one whose kilometres match the body.

Model 3

The 3 is the volume Tesla. Used stock is deepest in Sydney and Melbourne. Highland (2024) cars bring the stiffer body, new lights, and a quieter cabin. Pre-Highland Performance cars with Uberturbines look fast and cost range. For a first Tesla, a 2021–2023 Long Range dual-motor with Aero covers is the boring, correct answer.

Model Y

The Y is the family car. Seven-seat examples exist; the third row is for kids who do not have opinions yet. Rear-wheel-drive Y cars from 2022 are the value door. Performance Y cars on 21s will need tyres sooner than a Gemini Long Range. Juniper (2025) listings are still thin and priced like new leftovers.

What holds value

• Dual-motor Long Range over Standard Range, unless the commute is short.
• Heat pump over resistive heat if the car will see Canberra or Melbourne winter.
• Unmodified ride height. Lowering a Y to look like a 3 is a discount, not an upgrade.
• A tow bar that is Tesla-fitted, with the wiring still in the app.
